Governors Island to host underground arts festival

In an echo of the spontaneous, radical free expression of the annual
Burning Man festival in Nevada, Governors Island will erupt this Sunday
with a kaleidoscope of artistic expression, costumes and weird games.
"The big question is who will come and what will they bring," said
David Koren, executive producer of the Figment Festival. "The
inspiration comes somewhat from Burning Man and somewhat from the
underground New York arts scene."
A free,
volunteer-driven event, Figment will rely on the creative energy of its
participants, who are encouraged to sign up on the Web site though
Saturday with their project ideas.
Plans so far include a human powered carousel that generates
electricity, a limbo lemonade stand, and a race where costumed "sperm"
try to find and fertilize a costumed "egg."
"We know there will be significant number of people who have not
registered online, and that's OK," said Ryan Fix, a founder of the Pure
Project, which is curating the festival. "The more impromptu
performances and costumes the better. Everyone who attends is also a
participant. That's the beauty of it."
If this year's festival is a success, organizers hope to turn it into a
weekend-long, Fourth of July event that would bring international
attention to the city and Governors Island.
