Opportunities to join in stretch as far as your imagination! Last year, FIGMENT hosted a wide variety of creations including inflatable sculptures, group dance lessons, tree-based art installations, bathtub photo booths, roving samba bands, costumed stiltwalkers, medieval swordplay, climbable metal sculptures and more!
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Any artist, collective, or group with a great idea and the ability to execute it!
WHAT ARE THE DEADLINES?
Key projects will be given placement on the island on a rolling basis, beginning on April 1. If you have a large project or a project that requires specific placement or infrastructure, please submit it as soon as possible so that we can accommodate it. Any projects proposed for the National Park area of the island (Fort Jay, Castle Williams or the Parade Grounds) must be submitted by April 10. All projects should be submitted by June 1.
WHAT CAN CONTENT BE?
Street theater, costuming, sculpture, dance, performance art, installations, social experiments, mobile art, workshops, games, community building projects, arts & crafts, sound art, bands & DJ’s, lectures & seminars on themes of participatory art & culture, and anything else you can imagine! Installations, performances, activities, or other projects that can be set up outdoors are welcome. It is also possible that indoor space will be available for certain projects. If you have an idea for FIGMENT and have questions about whether it’s plausible, don’t hesitate to get in touch. You can set up your own area or host a scheduled event. No matter what you do, the one requirement is that it somehow engages audience participation. Just bring it to FIGMENT and try it out!
WHAT ABOUT FUNDING AND COMMERCE?
FIGMENT is a community-based event organized and run by volunteers. Its success is dependent on community participation. FIGMENT does NOT provide funding for the production, transportation, or insurance of works to, at, or from the island. FIGMENT encourages artists to fundraise for your project within your personal capacity. Please note that no corporate sponsorship (including logos and credit lines) is accepted by the festival, or permitted at the event. In addition, nothing may be sold at the event other than food and beverages from licensed vendors.
WHEN CAN WE SET UP? WHAT ARE THE HOURS?
The hours are expected to be 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 27, and 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29. All individuals must leave the island by closing time. Works may be delivered to the island and installed/de-installed during the island’s regular business hours (when the island is not open to the public) in the week before and afterward. Arrangements must be made with the FIGMENT festival for all deliveries, installations, and de-installations to or from Governors Island.
CAN A PROJECT STAY LONGER THAN THE FESTIVAL?
Organizations and individuals are also invited to submit proposals for installation projects to be located on Governors Island for longer than the three-day event, possibly for the entire summer season.
